Size & Weight

The Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket comes in three different sizes: 1-person, 2-person and junior.

1-Person

This is the most popular size as it is easy to take with you on outdoor adventures and is also great for sharing if you are sitting around a fire or cuddling on a couch. It weighs 2.1 lbs, and when flat, these blankets are 52 x 75″ in size. While packed, they are 7 x 16″.

2-Person

The 2-person Rumpl blankets are perfect for couples and groups. The extra length makes it easy to share whether you are camping or hanging out at the beach. The blanket weighs 3.7 lbs. When flat, the 2-person blanket is 80 x 80″ and packed is 8 x 19″.

Junior

The junior blanket was created for kids. Whether it’s their new favourite bed blanket, use it outdoors or even in the stroller, these blankets were designed to withstand the wear and tear of adventures at any age. The junior blanket weighs 0.6 lbs and is 28 x 40″ when flat and 5 x 7″ when packed.

Material

These blankets have 100% recycled 30D ripstop nylon fabric shells, which makes them lightweight yet durable for all your adventures.

Insulation Type

It is insulated with 100% recycled 3D hollow-fibre siliconized synthetic insulation. This is the same material used in insulated jackets and premium sleeping bags and is considered the entry-level synthetic fill, providing comfort and warmth. If you are looking for something warmer, check out the Rumpl Down Puffy Blanket.

Temperature Rating

It is not temperature-rated. However, Rumpl suggests it should keep you warm in weather 45ºF (7ºC) and over.

Water-Resistant

All the blankets in this line are treated with DWR (durable water repellency), so they can repel light rain, water and debris but are not entirely waterproof.

Features Of The Original Puffy Blanket That We Love

The Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket has several stand-out features, including being crafted from 100% post-consumer recycled materials, machine washable, and having a DWR finish. Along with these, there are a few additional features we feel are worth highlighting and giving special mention to.

Cape Clip (only on the 1-person blanket)

This is a feature that, quite frankly, makes sense. Surprisingly, not many other companies have thought of it, but we are glad Rumpl did! The cape clip allows you to use your blanket hands-free, so you can stay warm while doing various activities. This feature is only available on the 1-person blankets.

Paracord Corner Loops

Another practical and useful feature is the paracord corner loops. These help you easily stake down the blanket into the ground to help keep it in place and prevent it from blowing away. The corner loops will be useful in many scenarios, such as at the beach, camping, at a picnic, and integrating with a hammock as an underquilt.

Dual Functionality

While we have mentioned its dual functionality already, it is a feature we felt was worth highlighting. The Original Puffy blanket is durable and warm for outdoor use but also comfortable enough for indoor use. Thanks to the paracord corner loops, cape clip, durability and the option to use it indoors and outdoors, the versatility of these blankets is incredible. Why buy two blankets when you can have an all-in-one blanket?

Sustainable Approach

We love a good, sustainably sourced brand. Because, after all, we would not have the luxury of exploring the beautiful outdoors if we had no forests, trails or nature left. Rumpl is committed to being environmentally responsible and an environmental advocate, which shows in its products. Both the shell and insulation of the Original Puffy blanket are made from 100% recycled materials. In fact, Rumpl has upcycled millions of plastic bottles into their blankets and aims to use recycled materials whenever possible.

Our Review Of The Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket

When we first received the Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket, we were impressed that the entire thing fit into the bag. When we took it out, it looked exactly like the photos in terms of colour and aesthetics. Since we received this in the winter, we took it out in the snow to test its resistance to the wind and water, then again once the snow melted to see if it would be comfortable when staked down to the ground for outdoor activities.

Our initial impression of theRumpl Original Puffy Blanket is that it is incredibly lightweight yet provides a decent amount of warmth. It wasn’t heavy when using the cape clip feature or when wrapped around us. It was a pretty windy day when we first took it outside, and it did make a significant difference in protecting us from some of the wind. This is not a noted feature about these blankets but rather something we wanted to test out since we live in a colder climate. It is recommended to use in temperatures 45ºF (7ºC) and above, which it was not this day. However, it still held up and did a sufficient job against the cold winter air.

We also tested it out on the snow and laid on it for quite some time. It provided decent insulation between us and the snow. While these blankets are not completely waterproof, they are water resistant. And we think it does a pretty good job at that. When we lifted the blanket from the snow, we could see the snow melting onto the blanket, but it was not seeping in or making it damp. In fact, we just shook out the blanket, and it was good as new.

Our next test was when the snow melted. We staked the blanket to the ground, and it did not budge. It made for a comfortable cushion between us and the ground. It really is a fantastic blanket for the beach, park, or just hanging out outside. We are excited for the camping season to begin so we can take it out with us. Julia is particularly excited, as some nights can get chilly, even during a Nova Scotia summer and having a blanket that she can use hands-free at the campsite or while sitting by the fire is a game-changer.

Julia cozied up in the Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket with the snowy forest in the background.

As for indoor use, we tested it out a few times, and while it is warm, it does feel similar to a sleeping bag, so it is a bit slippery compared to your regular indoor blanket that’s typically made with polyester, cotton or wool. This is something that takes a bit of getting used to, but it did what it’s supposed to do, and once you are used to the material, we can’t see it being an issue.

Honestly, there wasn’t much we didn’t like about this blanket for its ideal uses of camping, lounging inside or outside of the house, around a fire, or on the beach. It packs up nicely back into the bag, which makes it easy to take to different places. This will definitely be our new go-to for these particular activities.

However, if we were going to go backcountry hiking, this would not be our first pick due to its packed size. When doing overnight hikes, we try to pack as lightly as possible, so having a warm and compactable blanket is ideal. We would be more likely to reach for the Rumpl Down Puffy Blanket or the Rumpl NanoLoft Puffy Blanket, which are designed for trails and backcountry hiking and pack much smaller.

All in all, the Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket does live up to the hype!
