Before You Start Hiking The Farmlands Trail

The Farmlands trail is a relatively easy and short hike. The trail takes hikers through groomed and grassy terrain to remnants of an old drumlin farm previously owned by Peter Rogers.

The trail is mostly groomed with a few front country bridges. It is important to stay on the designated paths to help protect fragile vegetation and reduce the likelihood of ticks. As Kejimkujik National Park is known for having ticks, we highly recommend bringing a tick removal tool kit.

This trail is located within the Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site. To hike the Farmlands Trail, visitors will need to purchase either a day pass or an overnight pass.

If you choose to stay overnight at Keji, there are a few accommodation options. Hikers can choose from the following: campsites, RV sites, roofed accommodations including oTENTik, Ôasis, rustic cabins and a yurt.

Please note that while the park is open year-round, certain activities such as camping, fishing and Whynot Adventure rentals are only seasonal.

As always, make sure to leave no trace behind. Clean up after yourself and do not approach or feed any wildlife along the trail.

Our Experience Hiking The Farmlands Trail

Our experience hiking the Farmlands Trail came during an extended stay in the Kejimkujik National Park. When we decided to do this hike, Nova Scotia was enduring a heatwave.

In our planning, we chose to hike the Farmlands Trail after the Hemlocks And Hardwoods Trail and Flowing Waters Trail before the hottest part of the day. The trail is short, and we would enjoy the air conditioning in our car immediately before and after the hike.

Arriving at the Farmlands Trail trailhead and parking lot, we parked the car, drank some water, and got on our way along this 1.1-kilometre loop.

The terrain of the Farmlands Trail was well-groomed, much like the other front country day trails Keji has to offer. This made it easy to move quickly and take in the beautiful scenery of the forest and farmland.

This trail also had some boardwalks to make it easier for hikers. Note that this trail is for hikers only. There are many other trails within the park that welcome cyclists.

We took our time in the shaded parts of the trail and walked swiftly through the unshaded areas. There are several interactive signs explaining the history of the farmland and how the land was once used. If you have the time, we encourage you to stop and read all the signs.

In a clearing about halfway through the trail, there are farmland structures worth checking out. The roofed structure offers shade and a place to rest and enjoy nature. By this time in the day, it was getting significantly hot, and we were ready for a swim and siesta.

Making our way around the loop, we quickly got back to our car. From there, it was time to relax for a few hours before getting to the next hike of the day: the Rogers Brook Trail.
